Wisdom Tooth Removal in Hoboken

Mid-Manhattan Oral Surgery and Hoboken Oral Surgeons are specialists in diagnosing and treating wisdom tooth problems as well as their removal when necessary in New York City and Hoboken, NJ. To schedule an appointment call 212-696-2677 (Manhattan) or 201-659-6999 (Hoboken).

We recommend that all patients have a wisdom tooth evaluation in the mid to late teen years. A full oral examination and dental X-rays, including a specialized panoramic or 3D X-ray, can help to determine the positioning of the wisdom teeth and find any problems that are likely to develop. Early evaluation and treatment of problematic wisdom teeth can vastly improve future oral health.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last of three sets of molars to erupt. They are the least necessary teeth in the mouth, and the teeth most likely to have problems. They may never emerge or may partially emerge, and may end up in a position that causes problems for the rest of your teeth.

How Are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

Any wisdom tooth that is likely to cause problems is generally extracted. After your mouth is thoroughly numbed, a small incision is made to open the gum tissue and remove any bone covering the tooth. The tooth is then grasped with dental forceps and gently removed. Sometimes, the tooth needs to be sectioned into smaller pieces first. Our office prefers to use self dissolving sutures (stitches) when they are needed.

Do Wisdom Teeth Always Need to Come Out?

If the wisdom teeth are properly aligned, fully erupted and can be properly cleaned, there is no need to remove them. However, if they are partially or fully impacted, emerge sideways, or push on the surrounding teeth, many complications can arise. Infection, shifting teeth, and even cysts or tumors could occur. Promptly removing problematic wisdom teeth before complications set in is considered the best course of action. That’s why a thorough evaluation by a specialist  is essential.

What to Expect

Most patients come to our office nervous and afraid about having their wisdom teeth removed. We find it extremely gratifying, when those same patients tell us “that was not what their friends told them to expect” or “I can’t believe it’s over” or “your lying- the tooth is not already out.”

Each patient is an individual, and even though most wisdom teeth become problematic- each patient’s problem is specific to their situation. At your consultation, we will examine you and suggest a plan specific for your case.  In the hands of a well trained and experienced specialist, wisdom tooth removal is often relatively simple and recovery is without any complications.

Before the procedure, we will ensure that your mouth is thoroughly numbed and will use the latest techniques to make certain that you are very comfortable. We will electronically send your pharmacy a prescription for pain medication, which you should take as directed to stay ahead of any discomfort. You will also receive detailed aftercare instructions regarding eating, drinking, smoking, and other considerations. With proper aftercare, most people feel much better within a day or two, and are back to their normal activities in two to three days.

Note About Anesthesia

You will have the option to have your procedure performed with local anesthesia, where we thoroughly numb the area.  Or you may choose to have your procedure performed with IV sedation anesthesia and local anesthesia. The primary difference, is that with IV sedation you are safely asleep for the local anesthesia injections and the procedure.
