Gum recession is the loss of gum tissue along the line where the teeth meet the gums. It is often a result of gum disease, but it can also be a result of the aging process, clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism) or even overly vigorous brushing. When the gums recede, the root structure of the teeth can become exposed. This can lead to a cycle of worsening tooth decay and gum disease, potentially leading to tooth shifting and even tooth loss.
